2016 was a damn light year for MMO's! I can't remember anything I really played on that front. Went back and fiddles with GW2 a bit, along with taking another brief go at Elder Scrolls Online. I think there might have been a little RIFT in there as well. But nothing to write home about. But all is not lost :) read on ....
So what's up for 2017? Well here is a couple links for what's on the table ...
My personal Top 3 ...
- Star Citizen
- Camelot Unchained
Will any of my Top 3 actually be released in 2017? Well time will tell, but I'm not sure they will make it.
While I still hope to be plesantly suprised by a Star Citizen release, I have to say WTF. This continues to have no real end date and has fallen off most Anticipated lists largely due to a growing lack of faith in actual release and an ongoing concern with ongoing monetization fueled by selling digitial artifacts ....
Crowfall is progressing nicely I feel. In my mind it remains one of the most exciting upcomming titles in terms of its unique mechanics. I have been playing some of the Alpha and the combat is pretty good as well.
Camelot Unchained continues to progress and is one of the few studios that keep their user base abreast of progress on a regular basis. It has possibilities for sure.
Other games of interest ...
I find the following 3 games pretty interesting as well, again largely due to some unique mechanics that will serve to differentiate them from the plethora of 'been there done that' Asian MMO's scheduled to hit in 2017 ...
This seems to be an incredibily ambitious project who's intent is to create a completely real life open world sandbox.
- Chronicles of Elyria
Characters have finitie life span. Land ownership.
Dark and Light
Open world sandbox fantasy survival. Supposedly was 12 years in the making ... picked up by a new developer last year and it is back on track.
So what else ya doing?
I had a lot of fun playing with groups in both The Division and Heroes and Generals this year. Both are great games and I suspect we will be ready for another roll here in 2017. Holler at me if you are interested in playing.
My fav studio, Paradox Interactive had a very strong year with their releases of Hearts of Iron 4 and Stellaris. Those two games, along with Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis, both of which received a lot of DLC love this year remain favorites for single player and coop play. They also released Tyranny which is an isometric RPG like Pillars of Eternity, but with a very unique twist on the storyline. They definetly kicked ass this year.
CIV 6 hit recently and is definetly one of the best initial CIV game releases every IMO. Fun single and coop play.
Bioware's Mass Effect Andromeda will hit in 2017 and that's going to be good!
Dawn of War III will hit for fans of RTS and the Warhammer theme.
And for the realism survival game fans, Escape from Tarkov has no competition! I have been watching the development this past year and this game looks like it blows H1Z1 or any of those other clones away. It's a Russian development and while there is a butt ton of video out there on it, I am posting the end of year 2016 Dev video. It is in Russian but its subtitled and does a great job of showing the systems. You should check this game out! The detail is well .... incredible! Check the weapon customization....
So show some activity mates! Post what you are doing, what's getting your juices flowing, and what yer looking forward to!
